Abstract

Advent of newer technology, awareness and access to dental care have led to a strong sense of competition amongst dental professionals, as a result of which stronger marketing strategies are being employed to penetrate the market. This study assesses the attitudes of practicing dental surgeons' towards role of ethics for marketing in dental practice. A nine closed item questionnaire was e-mailed to 70 randomly identified dental surgeons. The questionnaire focused on role and methods of marketing in dental practice, ethical perspective towards dental marketing and appraisal for regulations for marketing. It was found that majority of Indian practitioners view advertising as an important means of communication to the patients. General dentists were more inclined towards advertising as compared to the specialists. However, irrespective of the type of practice/education, all practitioners felt that there was a need for regulating the type of practices used for advertising.

Abstract

Dental surgeons have well-recognized professional and ethical responsibilities. However, as their role and the corresponding responsibilities expand further as the profession evolves, the demands of the profession increase and the context of professional approach may vary. The present study was carried out to assess ethical dilemmas experienced by dental students using a close-ended questionnaire. It explored different clinical scenarios, doctor-patient relationship, communication, autonomy, and consent. The most common ethical dilemmas encountered by the respondents were patient-related issues followed by clinical decision making issues. The respondents, mainly post graduates, felt that the present curriculum on ethics and its practical implications had to be improved. Seventy six per cent believed that dental surgeon-patient relationship is based on beneficence, autonomy, veracity, and confidentiality. Students' perceptions of ethical dilemmas in practice offer a foundation for designing a dental ethics curriculum that is realistic and appropriate.

Abstract

Removable Complete Dentures still exist as the treatment option of choice for majority of edentulous patients. The anatomical and adaptational limitations associated with this modality often refrains a clinician from attending patients of geriatric group. Most of the complaints associated with complete dentures are actual and not psychological, contrary to the belief of most clinicians. This article attempts to cover most of the common complains of complete denture wearers along with their possible causes and remedies.
